The St. Louis Cardinals arrive at Oracle Park still playing meaningful September baseball, armed with a contact-first offense that can change shapes. The San Francisco Giants return from a cross-country flight with a patched defense and another lost late lead fresh in the notebook.
The Giants have the right arm, but not his usual gloves
Logan Webb is firmly listed to start after calling his outing in Pittsburgh the “worst start of my career” in comments carried by mlb.com. Every hit charged to him was a single, but poor location and consecutive bases-loaded walks turned traffic into a collapse.
The immediate question is whether Webb can put his sinker and changeup back below the barrel. His ground-ball approach normally supplies efficient innings, but Matt Chapman, Willy Adames and Casey Schmitt are among the missing infielders on the Giants' mlb.com injury report.
That leaves inexperienced and replacement-level personnel handling the hard grounders Webb is designed to produce. A routine two-hopper can become a longer inning when the first step or transfer is not quite clean; the scorebook may call it a hit, but the pitcher still has to get another out.
Rafael Devers remains the lineup's central source of damage after driving the offense Friday and delivering a multi-homer game Saturday. The broader order is thin, however, and the Giants have already clinched a losing season while evaluating young players for the future.
The bullpen offers little margin if Webb's command remains loose. Carson Seymour worked on consecutive days and surrendered two home runs during Sunday's blown lead, making him a strong candidate to be unavailable or reserved for an emergency.
The Cardinals keep winning with different tools
Michael McGreevy is also firmly listed to start, working on five days' rest after a normal outing at Dodger Stadium. His sinker, four-seamer, sweeper and changeup give him options, though his success depends more on location than overpowering velocity.
The Cardinals won series in Los Angeles and Colorado through power, short swings, comebacks and sustained contact. Iván Herrera has been the steadiest recent catalyst, while Alec Burleson and Nolan Gorman give the lineup left-handed looks against Webb.
That profile fits the assignment. Webb's last failure came through singles, walks and an inning he could not stop, precisely the sort of traffic the Cardinals have been willing to create without hunting a home run on every swing.
The Cardinals do carry late-inning questions of their own. Cooper Hjerpe is effectively unavailable for conventional relief after a long Sunday appearance, while Riley O'Brien's recent wobble has created a trust issue without producing a confirmed closer change.
Oracle gives the bats an early window
First pitch is scheduled for 8:10 PM ET, with temperatures around 70–71°F and little rain risk. A light wind toward right-center should offer airborne contact some help before sunset, particularly for the left-handed bats.
Oracle Park still makes hitters earn the deepest part of right-center, and the cooling marine air should become more influential under the lights. The early innings are therefore the better scoring window; later, the old yard starts collecting fly balls again.

An early exit would expose a bullpen short on dependable leverage options, while runners inherited from Webb could bring the fourth run into play quickly.
