The Arizona Diamondbacks are chasing the final National League wild-card spot, while the Miami Marlins are trying to disrupt that pursuit. The finale has the look of a close game waiting for one bullpen to blink.
The D-backs have more than one late-inning answer
The D-backs showed their backbone in Monday's opener, with Jordan Lawlar homering late before Corbin Carroll delivered the walk-off. Carroll, Ketel Marte, Gabriel Moreno, Nolan Arenado and Lawlar have supplied different kinds of damage, so the lineup is not leaning on one hot bat.
Merrill Kelly is listed to start on normal rest after a short, inefficient outing in which traffic and free baserunners drove up his workload. His game is still built on sequencing: get ahead, then move the eye level with the changeup and several breaking-ball shapes.
Kelly becomes vulnerable when hitters can eliminate the soft stuff and sit on the fastball-cutter family. If his command slips again, the Marlins have enough left-handed and switch-hitting depth to make the D-backs reach for relief earlier than planned.
That handoff is less troubling for the D-backs. Kevin Ginkel recently escaped an inherited jam, Juan Morillo handled Monday's ninth cleanly, and the coming off-day allows the coaching staff to attack matchups with every rested leverage arm.
The Marlins lost the anchor of their relief plan
Ryan Gusto is also listed to start on normal rest after keeping the Marlins competitive against the Dodgers through a full starter's workload. His four-seamer and cutter give hitters two hard looks, but he needs the curveball and changeup to finish sequences against the D-backs' left-handed bats and switch-hitters.
The Marlins' offense is not running on fumes. They took consecutive games from the Dodgers before producing several crooked innings in this series, with Jakob Marsee and Javier Sanoja among the hitters applying pressure through contact, speed and timely damage.
The trouble begins behind Gusto. As mlb.com detailed, Pete Fairbanks lost sensation and proprioception in his throwing arm, landed on the injured list and is not expected back this season.
Jack Ralston then surrendered Carroll's walk-off homer in his first major-league save opportunity, while Tyler Zuber had already allowed Lawlar's late homer. The Marlins can mix and match, but that is scout-speak for nobody owns the ninth yet.
A closed roof keeps the variables in the dugouts
Chase Field's roof will be closed, taking wind and conventional rain-delay concerns out of the handicap. Thunderstorms and flooding remain possible outside, but the playing environment should stay controlled.
The synthetic surface rewards hard ground contact and speed, while the deep center-field wall can create awkward caroms. That suits both clubs' contact threats, but it does not manufacture the sort of weather-driven scoring edge that would make the total more attractive than the side.
Back the club with the cleaner route through the final outs
The starting matchup does not demand a heroic projection from either arm. Kelly has command risk, Gusto has shown he can control damage, and the Marlins' capable lineup makes a narrow result more plausible than a comfortable run-line cover.
The separation comes once the starters leave. The D-backs have credible leverage choices and an off-day that encourages aggressive deployment, while the Marlins must improvise without Fairbanks after their replacement options were exposed in a painful late reversal.
Tuesday's complete relief ledger remains unclear, so availability on both sides requires monitoring. Another early Kelly exit would also add mileage to a D-backs bullpen that has covered several short starts recently.
The moneyline is the cleaner expression of the edge. It asks the D-backs to win the late innings, not to clear five runs or manufacture a multi-run margin.
