Pirates bring sharper bats, but Jones must supply length

Brandon Lowe, Oneil Cruz, Ryan O’Hearn and Spencer Horwitz give the Pirates a dangerous left-handed core against a right-handed starter. That group has punished elevated mistakes lately, although Tuesday’s air is unlikely to reward anything short of true barrel contact.
Cardinals ask Pallante to keep the ball on the dirt
The St.Louis Cardinals also enter after postseason elimination, with the remaining schedule serving as an evaluation window for their younger players. Iván Herrera hit two home runs Sunday and Leo Bernal supplied the go-ahead shot, giving the middle of the order more teeth than the standings suggest.
Andre Pallante is officially listed to start on six full days of rest, but his status deserves monitoring because this remains an early outing after an injured-list spell for right-elbow inflammation. The original injury drew a “Not concerned” response from Oliver Marmol, as reported by mlb.com, yet the recent location of the issue leaves more scratch risk than usual.
When right, Pallante works below barrels with his sinker and trades strikeout volume for early-count grounders. That shape fits both the forecast and PNC Park, but it requires clean infield work after the Cardinals committed damaging defensive mistakes in Saturday’s extra-inning loss.
Herrera, Jordan Walker and Bernal provide right-handed power against Jones, while JJ Wetherholt and Alec Burleson add left-handed balance. Joshua Báez is unavailable with a left-oblique strain, and Masyn Winn’s lingering thumb soreness makes his lineup status another item to watch.
PNC Park turns into a poor launch laboratory
First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM ET, with temperatures in the upper 50s, showers likely and an easterly wind building into the low-to-mid teens with stronger gusts. That wind should blow mainly in from center and right-center, knocking down marginal fly balls rather than carrying them toward the seats.

Two run-suppressing plans meet run-suppressing weather
Jones can attack the Cardinals with upper-90s velocity and a hard, late slider, particularly when Herrera, Walker and Bernal expand below the zone. Pallante offers a different route to the same destination: sinkers under barrels, quick ground-ball contact and fewer chances for Pittsburgh’s left-handed power to get airborne.
The weather reinforces both approaches. Cool air and a stiff wind coming in attack each lineup’s clearest scoring route, and PNC Park offers little charity to merely adequate fly-ball contact—a scout might call that an honest out.
The full-game Under also avoids requiring Jones to carry the entire case by himself. If Pallante keeps Pittsburgh pounding the ball into the ground, the game can remain compressed even if Jones exits around the middle innings.
The main threats are a rain delay that shortens either starter’s outing, wet-ball command trouble and early exposure of Pittsburgh’s recently worked middle relief. Pallante’s recent elbow inflammation adds another concrete pregame uncertainty.
